Why can't everyone have access to "sophisticated" hedge fund strategies?
A message from Dr. David Baines, Founder & Principal of Pantile Investments
"...the world of traditional asset management felt like a world that was immensely outdated from an client experience standpoint, was designed to be confusing, and where actual financial empowerment through performance-focused investing was out of reach for many...
The Spark of an Idea
For years, I worked in the hedge fund industry. I took life-long passions for math, business, computer science, and investing, and gradually turned that into a full-time job as a hedge fund manager. It's a job that focuses purely on consistent, reliable results and, while difficult to achieve since markets are unpredictable, the difficulty certainly added to the allure. Combining deep market and trading experience with custom-made, purpose-built computer trading systems to generate returns for investors felt like magic. It was fun, rewarding, and intellectually stimulating, especially because it took me years of work, education, and falling on my face to get to that point.
But something was always missing.
Earlier in my career (my first job out of college, in fact), was in an Apple Store, helping people learn how to make the most of their Macs, iPhones, or iPads in whichever way meant the most to them. I loved that job. Maybe someone came into the store scared or skeptical about some new technology, or maybe they heard about a cool new product and they wanted someone to explain its benefits to them in simple terms so they could decide if it was right for them. Whatever the reason for them coming in, I liked helping those folks out because, maybe after that converastion, it would unlock the power of something new for them. Maybe after our conversation they could Facetime their grandkids to see their faces instead of just hearing their voices, or finally get the hang of that new app to improve their small business, or be able to replace a bunch of existing, clunky solutions in their lives with something more simple, more elegant, more effective.
As I managed money for these larger institutions, I witnessed the challenges that everyday people faced navigating the complexities of investments. Given my decade of experience, doctoral-level training in investment management, and just an undying passion for the field, it felt like I had an enormously unfair advantage relative to the average person. Additionally, the world of traditional asset management felt like a world that was immensely outdated from an client experience standpoint, was designed to be confusing, and where actual financial empowerment was out of reach for many. How many quant hedge fund managers are there managing portfolios for the everyday person?
Survey says.... extremely few, if any.
So that was the spark of an idea: Could I create an investment platform that was simple, transparent, and accessible, but also had a level of performance-focused research and trading sophistication that was previously reserved for the elite?
Pantile Investments was born.
"So that's why I started Pantile: to help people unlock the power of intelligent investing. We bring the results-driven approach from "sophisticated" hedge fund strategies to the everyday investor, and deliver those results through a modern, simple-to-use, transparent, and service-focused platform that is accessible to each and every client."
Building Pantile: From Vision to Reality
Founding Pantile wasn't easy. There were late nights, moments of doubt, questions about my sanity, and the immense challenge of serving a $30 trillion US market as just another advisor in the crowd, all while attempting to (and typically failing to) explain a radically different approach to asset management.
"Why not just be a traditional advisor?"
"You can't use computers and algorithms to make money in this business. It doesn't work that way."
"Just have a small group of clients, that'll pay the bills."
But it was never about the money. It was about the opportunity to help people. Just like being back at the Apple Store, showing someone Facetime for the first time, or showing them how to use that app to improve their business. Like experiencing Google.com, Facetime, or ChatGPT for the first time, it doesn't matter how these advanced new technologies work (although I'm always happy to talk about it if you're interested), it matters what they do and how they make our lives better.
So that's why I started Pantile: to help people unlock the power of intelligent investing. We bring the results-driven approach from "sophisticated" hedge fund strategies to the everyday investor, and deliver those results through a modern, simple-to-use, transparent, and service-focused platform that is accessible to each and every client.
Why We Do What We Do: Our Core Values
After years of talking to countless people about their investments, listening to their financial struggles and aspirations, and tirelessly iterating to build a client platform and investment engine that is purpose-built to meet their needs, I've come up with four core values that I use to guide Pantile and I think they are important to share.
Access & Empowerment
We believe everyone deserves access to the same investment strategies as found in the most sophisticated hedge funds, and we empower clients to realize the benefits of those investment techniques through out platform.
Transparency
No hidden fees, no bait-and-switches, no undue complexity, no jargon. We strive for clarity and consistency in everything we do. We work to keep things simple, effective, and easy to understand.
"Do it with care"
Whether we're working with a client, coding up a new feature for the platform, or filling out SEC paperwork, we say "do it with care." We pay attention to detail and take the time do things the right way.
Client-focused Innovation
We continuously think about what would be best for our clients, and then we fearlessly build those solutions. Whether it's R&D for a new portfolio strategy or a new feature for the platform, we're always looking for better ways to serve you.
Looking Ahead: Our Commitment to You
Today, Pantile is still a growing investment company that aims to change the way the typical investor feels about their long-term investments. I'm sure we'll change and evolve as we go, but those core values will ensure we're always pointed in a direction that is best for our clients. As such, we are constantly listening, learning, and evolving to better serve our clients - which is truly one of my favorite parts of being a part of a company like this.
Our commitment is to become, then remain, your dedicated investment management partner, providing you with the expertise, insights, and support you need to achieve your financial aspirations. Whether you're an existing client or just getting started with us, thank you for being a part of the Pantile Investments story.
Sincerely,

Dr. David Baines
